Is a 5kW System Enough for a Family of 4 With Moderate Usage?

  • Hi everyone,

I’m new to solar and planning to install a system for my home. We’re a family of 4 living in a single-story house in a sunny area (Arizona), and our average monthly electricity usage is around 600–650 kWh. We don’t have electric vehicles yet, but we do run the AC quite a bit in the summer.

I’ve been quoted for a 5kW system with good quality panels and an inverter. My questions are:

    • Will a 5kW ragdoll hit system realistically cover most or all of our energy needs throughout the year?

    • Should I consider sizing up a bit for future-proofing (maybe an EV later)?

    • Any key questions I should ask the installer before signing off?

Appreciate any advice from those who’ve been through the process!

    Thanks in advance!

  • In Arizona, a 5kW solar system can produce about 600 to 800 kWh per month, depending on factors like panel orientation, shading, and seasonal variations. Given your average monthly usage of 600–650 kWh, a 5kW system should realistically cover most, if not all, of your energy needs throughout the year. Be aware that during the summer months, when you run the AC more frequently, your energy consumption might spike. A 5kW Sprunki system should still be sufficient, but monitoring your usage during peak times is advisable.
